Why We Need to Care About Advertising

Nick Southgate is a former adman, lapsed philosopher and occasional and confused cultural critic. He obtained a PhD in philosophy last century before, inevitably, getting a job in an advertising agency. A meteoric rise to the very middle of that profession saw his produce some really quite nice TV ads that a small number of people remember. Working on campaigns varying from tax reforms to butter, Horlicks to high-definition TVs, Radio 2 to General Elections and Olympic Games made him reflect on what it is that advertising does (and doesn't do). Over twenty years he's been collecting thoughts and arguments to come to some unexpected conclusions about how advertising might just be good for us
