OK so it’s time for some Salon word association. I say ‘spring’. You say ‘Arab’ ‘Nature?’ ‘Rite of’? Whichever you went for, it indicates you’re a rare breed of person and so especially for you we present ‘Rites of Spring.’

1649 was a pivotal year. The English public - having tired of a King who had raised taxes for wars and spent it on art - upped and executed him. It was the start of the Interregnum, Oliver Cromwell was top dog and a very confused English psyche began to unfold. What drove a measured and revolution-adverse nation to such action? We wanted to know and so on the 24th June we’re going to Salon like its 1649.

Scandinavian glasswear? Contemporary Russian fiction? Foreign film festivals? We recognise you have superior taste, but it turns out our opinion doesn’t count. Because now there’s a scientific way of finding the 10% of us known as ‘supertasters’. Food innovator Robin Fegen is an expert in the science of supertasting and he will be at Salon’s Summer Essentials to test us all. Hearty congratulations will come the way of the supertasters, and tasty super treats to the commoners, courtesy of the has-to-be-seen-to-be-believed experimental food organisation The Robin Collective.

So when Latitude asked ‘what defines us, science or primal instincts?’, we pulled over a leopard-skin chair, placed one of our manicured hands on their taut thighs and said, ‘well, haven’t you come to the right place?’ So began a creative cultural curation by Salon London for Latitude 2013 to examine if we are just a slave to our dominant neural pathways, or bundle of sexual neuroses that would sleep with our grannies if we thought no one would find out.

The early 20th Century is a curious time in history for women, sex and power. Queen Victoria’s reign only just made it in to the century, and the Great War was about to change everything forever. So just what was Edwardian Britain really like? To find out for Harrogate’s first History Festival, Salon North is taking a lateral look at the years before the war.

Salon North promises big and delivers bigger, as on the 22nd November we have New Scientist Cosmology consultant Marcus Chown to explain the quantum world in ten easy steps. This award winning writer, broadcaster and astrophysicist developed this session especially for Salon to help us get to grips with the secrets of life, the universe and everything. After hearing him speak, we guarantee you will understand the forces of physics that govern our world from parallel universes to understanding how to travel through time.
